Aaron Swartz

Swartz snuck a laptop into an unlocked network closet on the MIT campus and used it to download millions of copyrighted academic journals from JSTOR. This case is interesting because JSTOR declined to pursue legal action, and he was instead prosecuted by the federal government. Also, he was legally able to access JSTOR, both because he was a research fellow at Harvard and because MIT allows visitors to access JSTOR. He committed suicide in 2011.
